Stainless Steel Street Furniture

Several cities around the world have adopted stainless steel street furniture due to its timeless beauty, service longevity, very low maintenance needs and low life cycle costs. Stainless steel street furniture can be produced from both flat products and long products with both product forms enhancing the appearance and attraction of urban settings.
When considering stainless steel street furniture there are a few important aspects within the supply chain that need to be managed to ensure no in-service dilemmas. These aspects include;

  1. Grade selection; The selected stainless steel grade must be appropriate, from a corrosion resistance standpoint, for the operating environment. Is it important to understand what corrosive media are present in the operating environment and that the stainless steel grade chosen will be suitable for that environment. It is always better that a single stainless steel grade is used for each complete piece of stainless steel street furniture. Mixing of different stainless steel grades should not be undertaken without guidance from stainless steel producers or stainless steel associations. Furthermore, mixing with other metals and materials can lead to unwanted problems and therefore any material choices of this nature should always be checked out with materials science specialists.
  2. Fixings selection; Any fixings use should be compatible with the primary stainless steel grade selected for the street furniture. In other words, the fixings grade should be at least the same as the primary stainless steel grade or a higher stainless steel alloy. The use of carbon steel or galvanized steel fixings should never be adopted due to a strong likelihood of galvanic corrosion.
  3. Fabrication techniques; It is always worth establishing that the chosen fabricator is capable of fabricating stainless steels and has a workshop when stainless steels can be appropriately stored. There is currently a large variation in fabricator capability when the processing of stainless steels is considered.
  4. Street Furniture Cleaning; Some locations will provide regular cleaning (or washing) of street furniture due to regular rainfall. Other locations will not provide natural washing and/or may be close to the sea. In these second group of locations then a regular washing and cleaning regime needs to be in place to ensure the stainless steel street furniture always looks pristine. Stainless steel products will last for more than 100 years but need regular cleaning and care in order to deliver more than 4 generations of perfect appearances.
