  3. On-site methods for stainless steel grade product sorting

    Guidance on methods for sorting stainless steels from low alloy and carbon steels is shown. These include physical, (colour, density, magnetic), and mechanical, (hardness), properties and chemical tests, (copper sulphate, copper chloride, nitric acid and sulphur tests). A suggested approach to a step-by-step procedure for differentiating stainless steels from carbon steels is tabulated. These methods have not been verified by the BSSA, who take no responsibility for their accuracy of the conclusions reached on steel types.

  9. Selection of stainless steels for surgical implants

    The special compositions, non-metallic inclusion, ferrite and grain size requirements of these steel grades, D and E specified for surgical implants are outlined. Commercially produced 316 type steels cannot be used for surgical implants as the available composition and micro-cleanness information is very unlikely to meet the requirements of BS 7252-1, ISO 5832-1.

    This BSSA Special Report firstly clarifies the definitions of long products, drawn from BS EN 10079, including rod, wire, hot rolled bars, hot forged bars and bright products including drawn, turned and ground bar. The development of standards from BS 970 to BS EN 10088-3 is traced for long products.
