Chemical and mechanical properties of British Standard Aerospace S100 bar grades

Introduction

British Standard Aerospace products for bar have their own individual standards and are not summarised in a single Standard. The table shows most of the grade numbers that are commonly encountered.

BS ‘100’ bar grades

Composition, (Max, unless stated).
S, 0.025% and P, 0.035% maxima apply to most of the grades shown , except grades S124, S137, where sulphur is added, (0.15/0.40%). Grades S160 and S161 have S, 0.030% and P,0.025% maxima
Tensile Strength, (Min, unless stated)
Impact strengths are specified for some grades and can depend on the limiting ruling section, (LRS). Check the standards for impact limits.
Hardness, HB, (Max, unless stated). Figures shown apply to the smallest LRS
Status; ‘C’ represents Current, ‘W’ represents Withdrawn
Treatments: CW = Cold Worked ; HT = Hardened and Tempered ; FHT = Final Heat Treatment ; S = Softened
For heat treatable grades only the HT or FHT mechanical strength values are shown.
