BS EN 10088-3:2014 has been updated

Stainless steels – Technical delivery conditions for semi-finished products, bars, rods, wire, sections and bright products of corrosion resisting steels for general purposes

What is BS EN 10088-3 about?

BS EN 10088 is a series of European standards on stainless steel that discusses the characteristics of stainless steel and the best procedures and specifications required for manufacturing high-quality stainless steel products. BS EN 10088-3 is the third part of a series of documents on stainless steel. BS EN 10088 specifies the technical delivery conditions for semi-finished products, hot or cold formed bars, rods, wire, sections, and bright products of standard grades and special grades of corrosion resisting stainless steels for general purposes.

NOTE: General purposes include the use of stainless steel in contact with foodstuffs.

The general technical delivery conditions specified in EN 10021 apply in addition to the specifications of BS EN 10088 unless otherwise specified in BS EN 10088.

BS EN 10088 does not apply to components manufactured by further processing of the product forms listed above with quality characteristics altered as a result of such further processing.

Who is BS EN 10088-3  for?

BS EN 10088-3 on stainless steels is relevant to:

  • Manufacturer of semi-finished steels products, bars, rods, wire, sections
  • Laboratories

Why should you use BS EN 10088-3?

Stainless steel is a durable and affordable metal that is used for a wide variety of purposes. It’s strong, making it perfect for construction purposes, and it’s corrosion-resistant, so it can last a long time without being replaced or breaking.

BS EN 10088-3 on stainless steel offers the most up-to-date guidance on the classification of grades, chemical composition, mechanical properties, surface quality, internal soundness, inspection, and testing.

The guidance provided by BS EN 10088-3 helps you to manufacture high-quality corrosion resistance hot or cold-formed bars, rods, wire, sections that have a long service life and help you to expand the market reach for the product and build consumer trust and confidence. With BS EN 10088-3 you can be ensured that products consistently meet and exceed quality assurance targets.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 10088-3:2014 supersedes EN 10088-3:2005.

BS EN 10088-3:2014 mainly differs from the 2005 edition as follows:

  • Addition of austenitic grades 1.4615, 1.4646, 1.4020, 1.4378, addition of austenitic-ferritic (duplex) grades 1.4162, 1.4662, 1.4482, 1.4062, 1.4669, addition of ferritic grades 1.4611, 1.4621, 1.4613 addition of martensitic grade 1.4150, addition of precipitation hardening grade 1.4612;
  • Chemical composition was changed for the following grades: austenitic grade 1.4597, austenitic-ferritic grade 1.4362;
  • Standard inspection document is now a test report 2.2 according to en 10204;
  • Mechanical values changed for austenitic grade 1.4372, for martensitic grades 1.4313, 1.4028, 1.4122, 1.4057, and precipitation hardening grade 1.4606;
  • Mechanical values for bright bars have been changed for austenitic grades 1.4305, 1.4529, 1.4378, 1.4020, for austenitic-ferritic grades 1.4062, 1.4162, 1.4482, 1.4662, 1.4507, and martensitic grades 1.4028, 1.4122, 1.4057.
