AN N’GENIUS NEW INVENTION IN STAINLESS STEEL TECHNOLOGY

A new series of high strength austenitic stainless steels has been developed that could be the most significant innovation in stainless steel technology for more than a century.

The NGENIUS Series™ of High Strength Austenitic Stainless Steels, patent protected in 30 countries around the world, represents the total reinvention of conventional austenitic stainless steels – specifically developed to out-perform, supersede and replace the majority of existing grades in the 300 Series.

Dr Ces Roscoe, the metallurgist behind the NGENIUS Series and inventor of the original 25Cr Super Duplex stainless steel, said:

“The various alloy types and variants in the NGENIUS Series™ have been purposely formulated to possess a range of unique design characteristics.

Their strength properties are equivalent to Duplex and Super Duplex stainless steels, whilst their ductility and toughness properties have all the advantages that are normally associated with austenitic stainless steels, particularly at sub-zero temperatures, but at the same time possessing far superior corrosion resistance.

“The NGENIUS™ advanced technology has also been applied to develop an extensive range of Corrosion Resistant Alloy line pipe grades, which is one of the aspects that excites me most.”

Why do this? Well let’s look at the context.

The world currently produces in excess of 50 million tonnes of stainless steel every year, of which Austenitic grades account for more than 70%. But aside from a limited number of higher-alloyed and niche grades, the majority of available materials haven’t changed significantly since the 1960s. And with an ever-increasing demand for materials that are stronger, last longer and are better for the planet, a new generation is not only needed, but vital.

The NGENIUS Series is the most complete ‘family’ of high strength austenitic stainless steels in the world, which can manufactured in both wrought and cast form, specified and utilised across a vast range of markets, industries and applications, and applied to all types of primary, secondary, engineered and fabricated products – providing total system capability.

And whilst the science is complex, the concept is not.

With unprecedented strength compared to conventional austenitic stainless steels, vastly improved corrosion resistance and excellent toughness at sub-zero and cryogenic temperatures, engineers can design products with reduced wall thicknesses, using less material and making products easier to handle and transport to site. This can also lead to weight savings and an overall reduction in Construction and Project Costs, and ultimately contribute to lower Carbon Emissions.

The superior corrosion resistance of the N’GENIUS Series™ also increases the overall lifespan of these projects, reducing long-term maintenance costs and improving environmental sustainability.

Everybody wins. Even the planet.

Furthermore, due to its unique combination of mechanical and corrosion resistance properties, those specifying the N’GENIUS Series™ can select Alloy Types and Variants which are less sensitive to alloy surcharge, relative to higher alloyed grades, leading to savings in overall project costs.

The following list gives a sense of the scale and impact that the N’GENIUS Series™ will have on markets and industries throughout the world:

Traditional and new global markets and industries including Aerospace, Architectural, Automotive, Beverage and Brewing, Biochemical, Chemical Process, Construction, Defence, Desalination, Engineering, Environmental Protection, Flue Gas Desulphurisation, Food, Health and Medical, LNG and FLNG, Marine, Mining and Minerals, Naval, Nuclear, Oil and Gas, Petrochemical, Pharmaceutical, Power, Pulp and Paper, Refining, Renewable Energy, Specialist Technology Projects, Vapour Recovery, Water and Waste Water, as well as emerging Green Technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage and Hydrogen Storage and Transportation will all benefit from utilising the N’GENIUS Series™.

Paul Harrison, Sales Director at N’GENIUS™ Materials Technology, added:

“The potential is simply mind-blowing and we have seen a huge level of interest from End User Clients around the world, whose design engineers are incredibly excited about the advantages that the N’GENIUS Series™ can deliver.

“For Manufacturers, this is a unique opportunity to be centrally involved in the global roll-out of the next generation of advanced materials technology – fast-tracking the expansion of material portfolios, enhancing product ranges, increasing market share, opening up new markets and, crucially, driving up revenue and shareholder returns.”

N’GENIUS™ Materials Technology is now in discussions with manufacturers with a view to licensing the N’GENIUS Series™ for production, sale and distribution for various markets, industries and applications.
